READING PASSAGES AND BINGO

BINGO is a fun way to review new concepts and vocabulary words. The words in this BINGO set relate to the topic of Transcontinental Railroads and  makes the perfect review for the nine pages of informational text that are included in this product. The passages can also be used for CLOSE READING, using any non-fiction graphic organizer (not included). Great for use by Substitute Teachers!

Reading Passages

Although all cards contain the same 24 words, the order on each card is unique.  Each student will find every word on their card.  Of course, this means blackout is not a good option although my students sometimes insisted on playing all the way through and singing out BINGO in unison at the end!

This product is great for a large group, class or co-op.!  It can be played in the traditional way where the instructor randomly chooses one of the cards and calls out the word.  Or, to play as a review game, the instructor can read the clue that appears on the card below the BINGO word.

What was the United States like in the 1800s? The answer to that question depends on whether you are talking about the beginning or the end of the century.  From 1800 to 1899, the United States underwent major changes!

Wild West Careers: Explorers – Lewis and Clark
This product contains 6 one-page reading passages covering the Louisiana Purchase, the Corps of Discovery, Lewis and Clark, Sacagawea, the Expedition and more.  With the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, the United States almost doubled in size.  The Lewis and Clark’s Expedition to explore the new land began in 1804 and took over two years.  This lesson examines its impact on the United States and Westward Expansion and includes:

Wild West Careers: Pony Express Riders, the Telegraph and Buffalo Bills’ Wild West Show.
This product contains 8 one-page reading passages covering The Pony Express, the Telegraph and Transcontinental Lines, Former Pony Express Rider- Buffalo Bill Cody, the Wild West Show, Annie Oakley and more.  Imagine living thousands of miles away from your family with no easy way of communicating. Suppose there are no phones, no internet and no regular mail delivery. News of important events might take weeks or months to reach your loved ones. This is what life was like for people living apart from their families in the 1800s.  The Pony Express and the Telegraph were two attempts to deal with the communication dilemma.  Showman Buffalo Bill Cody started out as a pony express rider and his career is examined in this lesson plan as well.

Davy Crockett; Remember the Alamo

This lesson is one in a series of 14 lessons on Wild, Wild West Careers.  Each of the lessons covers the careers and information about the era as it relates to the career.  The series covers the United States during the 1800s, including events that contributed to Western Expansion.  Each lesson can also be used individually.    These are GREAT FOR SUBS – ALL INFORMATIONAL TEXT IS INCLUDED!!!

In the early part of the 1800s, land west of the Mississippi River was complete wilderness. This land consisted of rivers, mountains, forests and prairies and was occupied by Native Americans and wild animals. The frontier was the name given to the wild and unfamiliar land that lay west of civilized America.  A frontiersman was a man who hunted, trapped, and traded on the frontier.  Many lived isolated lives, traversing the land, following rivers, and climbing mountains in search of beavers, raccoons, and bears - any animal whose fur could be sold.

7th, 9th, and 10th Cavalry; Indian Wars
Native American Warriors Part II (1864-1904)

In the early 1800s, the United States government began forcing many Native American Tribes from their ancestral homeland to land set aside west of the Mississippi River. The government continued the process of Indian removal for several decades.  However, in 1865 when the Civil War ended, efforts became even more focused on moving Native Americans in the western states to government-controlled reservations.  Cavalry Regiments were formed to fight in the Indian Wars.
